There is a joy celebrating the memory of your furry best friend, such in this sweet, beautifully detailed Pug friend in crystal reverse intaglio brooch from Victorian era.
For the Victorians no house was a home without a pet and their jewelry was often designed to include an image of a cherished pet.
In an ode to the connection between humans and animals here is presented an extraordinary example of a Victorian reverse crystal intaglio, also called crystal essex, depicting a sweet pug.
Originating around the mid 1800s, this style of carving is referred to as an Essex crystal: a cabochon of clear rock crystal has been carved on the flat side and splendidly hand painted in minute detail to capture a superb three-dimensional realistic image enhanced by a thin back layer of mother of pearl. Astonishing details and intense naturalistic coloring add to the wonderment of the rendering of the loved canine.
Charming and detailed, this realistic dog is rendered in inky blacks, chocolate browns to umber, tan and hazelnut for expressive the eyes, fine details and various shades were chosen to complete this work of art.
His soulful expression gazes out looking right, proud and tender; his nose appears almost wet as if alive and breathing.
