The silk voice
Goldfinch is one of the rare glimpses of beauty in life, symbol of joy and reminder to savour life, this distinctive bird has been coveted for centuries for its symbolism and voice.
Very much loved by Victorians for its beautiful silken songs. Here a fine example of antique crystal reverse intaglio of a goldfinch set on gold locket pendant.
Originating around the mid 1800s, this style of carving is referred to as an Essex crystal: a cabochon of clear rock crystal has been carved on the flat side and splendidly hand painted in minute detail to capture a superb three-dimensional realistic image. Astonishing details and intense naturalistic colouring add to the wonderment of the rendering of the loved bird.
The beautiful goldfinch is depicted showing its colourful red and yellow plumage, perched on a branch of a tree. Carved on an oval cabochon cut crystal, the carved scenery is very well executed and hand painted appearing almost alive and ready to fly away.
The artistic reverse crystal intaglio is set in a 15 Kt yellow gold with lovely dark patina, its surround is a gold bezel. A rim of minute, fine twisted wire work encircles the rock crystal along with the Etruscan revival setting are all design and workmanship characteristics representative of the 1860s.
On the reverse a glass locket compartment to store the image or a keepsake of your loved one.
Very good overall condition commensurate to use and age.
